MDAC to regulate aerial applicators
Delta Farm Press

Gov. Haley Barbour and EPA have authorized the Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce and Commissioner Lester Spell to assume the responsibility of regulating aerial applicators effective today.

MDAC will administer the regulation and licensing of aerial applicators through the Bureau of Plant Industry, a regulatory and service agency of MDAC that protects the agricultural and horticultural interest of Mississippi. BPI will register, license and administer compliance programs for the agricultural aviation industry to ensure public safety and help maintain the important role agricultural aviation plays in Mississippi.

Currently, BPI regulates all pest control operators, private and commercial ground applicators and the aerial application of hormone-type herbicides. The Mississippi Agricultural Aviation Board, which was responsible for regulating aerial applicators, expired on June 30.

For further information, contact BPI at (662) 325-3390 or toll free at (888) 257-1285.

By David Bennett

“Once it was clear what the outcome would be, we moved ahead, and on June 12 we announced all of our 2008 marketing loan rates,” said Agriculture Secretary Ed Schafer, during a press conference.

Costs are catching up with crops.
By: Ernie Flint, Ph.D., CCA, Area Agent – Agronomic Crops
Mississippi State University Extension Service

As I discussed last week, we have in most cases reached a point with this crops that feels a lot more stable than at any time since we started planting corn in March. I think I referred to this as being “over the hump”; but for farmers who have been at this for a long time we still refer to this time as being “laid-by”. We are in fact, and almost unbelievably, on track with most of the crop.

Experts lower expectations for 2008 cotton crop

By Elton Robinson
Farm Press Editorial Staff

Cotton production in the two top-producing states is off to a slow start, which could result in a significantly smaller 2008 U.S. cotton crop this fall of between 12 million and 13 million bales, according to market analysts. USDA has projected a U.S. cotton crop of 14.5 million bales.

Mississippi peanut acreage keeps on rolling
By Elton Robinson
Farm Press Editorial Staff

Six years ago, fewer than 4,000 acres of peanuts were planted in Mississippi, hardly worth a mention by USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. But when the 2002 farm bill did away with the quota system for peanuts, acreage started to climb toward respectability.

“It opened the door for anyone to grow peanuts,” said Mike Howell, area agronomist for the Extension Service who has peanut responsibilities for the state. “We had a lot of new growers coming in because of that.”
